The music department is fully equipped to prepare boys for the IEB Senior Certificate in Music. Boys taking Music as a subject follow an intense programme, covering all the outcomes required for the subject. This includes practical components (solo performance, ensemble music and improvisation), theoretical components (harmony, music theory, music history, composition and arrangement), industry related modules (music technology, music as a career, events coordination) and aural development. This subject forms part of the FET (Further Education and Training) in the National Curriculum Statement and is offered for boys from Grade 10 to Grade 12.
To prepare boys for Music as a subject, interested boys in Grade 9 can opt to take a music “elective”: a weekly lesson where they are introduced to music notation, music technology and improving their aural and musical abilities. Electives are aimed at giving students the opportunity to explore a new field or subject and create an environment in which they can make an informed decision when choosing subjects for Grade 10.
Music also forms part of the Arts and Culture syllabus and all Grade 8 and 9 boys are taught the basics of singing music genres and the elements of music.
