NOTABLE ALUMNI
Running for Rhinos
Team Canyon Creepers’
Theo York
(Finningley 2009) and
Ryan Cloete
(Pembroke 2009) ran the 73km
Kruger2Canyon Trail Run Challenge as
part of the Old Mutual Wild Series during
October. The two-day stage race consisted
of 28km of trail on the first day through
a Big 5 Reserve neighbouring the Kruger
Park, followed by 45km of mountain trails
through and over the Blyde River Canyon
on day two.
With the world rhino population having
fallen by more than 90% in the past 30
years, the avid wildlife, bush and trail running
enthusiasts decided to use the race as an
opportunity to make a difference by raising
funds for the Adopt a Rhino Programme,
headed by the Wildlands Conservation
Trust through the More Than Yourself
platform of Old Mutual.
Through this initiative they hope to reach
their goal of R25 000 required for the
adoption programme – and at the time of
going to press were at R19 000.
All donations are allocated to Team Canyon
Creepers’ specific rhino programme, to
improve security measures with more
field rangers, employing GPS tracking
technologies on the rhino or providing
aerial surveillance. Donations can be made
