NOTABLE ALUMNI
Malawi Missions
During 2014
Chris Smith
(Pembroke
2010) and a group of friends visited Malawi
where they were shocked by the poverty,
yet amazed by the positive, happy Malawian
people. A year later, in November 2015,
Chris and his team returned for two weeks
to renovate the
Sani School
in Nhkotakota
Bay, a school of 900 children with only six
teachers.
They refurbished classrooms (painting walls,
adding chalk boards and locks to the doors
for security), constructed a soccer field and
provided the school with soccer
balls, started a library by building
shelves and donating books to the
library, provided stationery for the
school and distributed Bibles to the
community.
“It took us longer than we expected
to paint the classrooms as there
was lots of cleaning to do before
painting could start – like removing
termite mounds from the corners
and wasps nests from the rafters.
We completely revamped and
decorated two classrooms and the
main office, repainted blackboards in
the other four classrooms and fixed
desks.
“Malawi Missions is going to be an annual
expedition. The school desperately
needs more teachers and the best way
to encourage teachers to move to Sani
School is to provide them with good
accommodation. So we plan to raise funds
to build staff houses,” Chris says.
In 2016
Malawi Missions
is also going to help
the greater community. As some members
of the team are veterinary students, they are
looking at designing a programme to help
farmers in the area.
“It was an incredibly humbling experience
that definitely left us feeling like these
people had changed our lives in more ways
than they will ever know.”
