Passing of Justin Hall

It is with much sadness that that we notify you of the death of Mr. Justin Hall, past teacher at Kearsney College (1963 – 2003).

In his 40 years at the College many young Kearsney lads enjoyed Justin’s unflappable personality and his execrable puns have time and time again turned moments of staff tension into helpful laughter.

In the words of Mr. Robin Lamplough (past teacher, 1967 – 2003) from the publication “Opportunities Seized, a History of Kearsney College”:

Justin Hall came to Kearsney in 1963 as a young graduate to teach geography. His timetable also included a little history. The following year a staff change led him to take over the history department, a post in which he served with distinction for twenty-nine years, being appointed chief examiner successfully by the Natal Education Department and the Independent Examining Board. A visit to the United Kingdom in the 1970s led him to introduced evidence-based history at Kearsney at a time when few schools in the province were prepared to risk such an advanced approach. He is also the author of several history textbooks.

In 1963 he started hockey as an inter-school sport at Kearsney and he was master-in-charge of hockey until 1977. He also coached a variety of cricket sides, including the first XI in 1972. He was master-in-charge of cricket for many years.

He was a widely respected housemaster of Haley House between 1973 and 1983, by which time he had also been appointed Senior Master (1980). He was appointed deputy Headmaster with responsibility for academics in 1994. He and his wife Pat have made it their business to provide a stabilizing influence during times of rapid change.”

Kearsney College Old Boys send their deepest sympathies to Pat and the family.
