Rhodes Scholar Alex von Klemperer (Class of 2006, Dux of the College) took time out of his busy schedule to address the boys of the 12 Club at Kearsney in Term 2.
Alex will be furthering his studies in Neuroscience at Oxford University and he spoke to the boys about his research and about the Rhodes Scholarship criteria and selection process. Alex urged the boys to appreciate the privileged education that they have been fortunate enough to enjoy and to make most of the opportunities they have been given.
Alex’ scholarship covers a one-year Masters in Neuroscience and a three-year DPhil, during which he plans to study neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, epilepsy and Parkinson’s. He is also interested in studying the overlap between HIV/Aids and tuberculosis.
A medical graduate from the University of Cape Town, Alex recently completed his internship at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.
